Tenova’s flexible BF/BOF technologies - designed to produce steel in the most efficient, productive and cleanest way possible
By Douglas Zuliani, Tenova Goodfellow Inc.

ABSTRACT
Traditional dividing lines between EAF/BOF routes have blurred due to rapidly changing economics including fluctuating ore and scrap prices, record low natural gas prices and tightening environmental regulations. The challenge facing steelmakers is how to take advantage of opportunities and avoid potential pitfalls to successfully adapt to changing energy and raw materials pricing and stiffer environmental regulations. This paper describes Tenova’s ground breaking i STEEL® program providing highly flexible BF/BOF technologies adaptable to evolving energy and raw materials situations to enable the most economical and environmentally efficient production;

Developing the MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process – technological innovations and process enhancements
S. Lahiri, A. Jha, Midrex Technologies India Private, Ltd. C. Ravenscroft, Midrex Technologies, Inc. USA

ABSTRACT
This Midrex name is synonymous with direct reduction technology. The MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process has become the direct reduction industry’s most successful technology in terms of both annual tonnage and the number of successfully operating plants. Each year since 1987, over 60 percent of the world’s direct reduced iron has been produced in MIDREX® Direct Reduction Plants. In total, more than 830 million tons have been produced via the MIDREX® Process. These MIDREX® DRI plants also hold some of the industry’s top records including most tons produced in a single calendar year and most continuous hours of operation. More importantly, there is no “expiration date” for these DRI Plants as Midrex has never let the technology sit idle. Since pioneering the MIDREX® Shaft Furnace technology in the 1960s, the company has continued to develop innovative technology solutions that apply to both new and existing plants.

Ironmaking in Western Europe – Status quo and future trends
By Hans Bodo Lüngen, Senior Manager , Düsseldorf, Germany; Michael Peters, Head of Production Hot Metal, Duisburg, Germany; Peter Schmöle, Head of Competence Centre Metallurgy, Duisburg, Germany

ABSTRACT
Blast furnaces operated in Europe are highly performed, low in reductant rates and high efficient. Campaign lives of over 20 years have been achieved. Investments have been done in the modernization of blast furnace plants, in new coal injection facilities and new top gas recovery turbines. The lowest limit of reductant consumption under the given boundary conditions and also the resulting CO2 emissions has been achieved.

Efficiency of sleeved rolls at rolling mills
By P. B. Sokolov «Uralmashplant» JSC (Ekaterinburg, Russia)

ABSTRACT
To completely avoid the axial and circumferential displacements of the sleeve with respect to the arbor, reduce tensile stresses in the sleeve and increase the service life of rolls, special designs of sleeved rolls were developed. An original mechanical fastening between the arbor and the sleeve provides a reliable joint. The proposed designs and technologies of sleeving can be used for production and repair of backup rolls for hot and cold rolling mills, large work rolls for hot rolling mills, rollers of carry-over tables, withdrawal rollers for secondary cooling lines of continuous slab casers. The use of wear-resistant materials for roll sleeves can significantly improve the performance of rolls and their endurance in emergencies.
